Birds like fresh, clean water. The drinking water should be changed at least once a day. If you notice the water is dirty, then refresh it even if you have already changed it on that day.
Your pet bird requires a cage big enough for it to completely spread it's wings and be able to excercise. Also, keep in mind that cage accessories such as Bird Feeders, Water Dispensers, Perches and Toys will take up some of the room. The bigger the cage, the better.
The cleaner the cage, the better. Gravel paper needs to be present and replaced daily. The cage should also be disinfected and cleaned at least once a week. Only use products made specifically for bird cage cleaning as household cleaners may be toxic to your pet bird.
Because of a bird's need for variety keep 3-4 toys in the cage. Make sure you purchase extra toys for rotation. Rotating the toys regularly will help prevent your bird from becoming bored with them. Wash, disinfect and inspect your bird's toys regularly for possible safety concerns. Be sure to visit our Toys Page for more information.
Plucking is usually a sign of boredom, anxiety or depression. The happier your bird is, the less likely he will be plucking his feathers. There are anti-plucking products you can give your bird.
Bird grooming consists of wing trimming, bird bathing, beak clipping and nail clipping. The beak clipping, nail clipping and feather trimming should be done regularly by an avian vet or an experienced bird breeder. Domestic birds should bathe periodically. Some bird's prefer a small container like a bird bath, while other pet birds tolerate being sprayed or misted with clean water. Bird cleaning products are also available such as bird shampoos. Your pet bird can bathe once a day or as often as convenient.
Only a veterinarian can diagnose and treat illness. Contact a vet as soon as possible if your bird shows signs of illness. For more information on your pet bird's health and a list of symptoms to be aware of, please visit our Health Page.
